At Kuhl Home, we are invested in helping parents to provide their children with everything they need to grow up happy and healthy. In keeping with this, at the end of November we hosted a talk from Jacki Roche at our Kids’ furniture showroom on Pasir Pajang Road. Jacki, a partner of Expat Living, came to give a talk to parents on Sleep Solutions for Babies.

Parents attending the event not only enjoyed the benefit of Jacki’s wisdom, but also a range of pastries and refreshments. On offer were teas, coffees, pain au chocolat, cheese sticks and quiche, as well as a prize raffle. The prizes on offer were a toy guitar, a monkey-shaped smoke detector and even an inflatable float! After the talk came a helpful Q&A session where Jacki took questions from the curious mummies in attendance.

As we mentioned at the start, the topic of the talk was Sleep Solutions for Babies and there were a number of areas covered. Here we take a quick look at some of the wisdom imparted by Jacki during the two hour talk.
“How Much Sleep Do Babies Need?”
The first thing to come out was the fact that an unsurprisingly high number of new parents suffer from sleep deprivation. Most mummies agreed that it was something they expected, but much less knew the facts on how much sleep children actually need.
We found out that babies up to three months old need a lot of sleep. Somewhere in the region of 14 to 17 hours to be exact. Between 4 and 11 months, this figure drops down to 11 to 14 hours and between 3 and 5 years of age, it’s 10 to 13 hours.
“Why is Sleep so Important?”
Jacki highlighted during the talk that sleep is vital to a baby’s early development. The reasons for allowing baby to get the right amount of sleep are many and varied:
When a person doesn’t get enough sleep, it increases their chances of depression, anxiety, obesity and diabetes. Making sure that mummy and baby both get enough is important.
Another area covered by Jacki was routines, which are extremely useful for developing the structure that babies need. Depending on the age of your child, there should be certain elements present in your routine.
0-3 Months – You should be nurturing, establishing milk feeding and spending most of your time with your baby.
3-6 Months – A night and day routine in line with typical circadian rhythms should be established.
6-12 Months – A routine should now be in place, with solid foods being gradually introduced into baby’s diet.
You must take into account that each baby is unique and there is a wide range of routines that would be considered as ‘normal’. The most important part to focus on at the beginning is creating a strong bond between baby and Mummy.
Also ensuring that the area baby sleeps in is calm, cool and free of distractions is important to establishing a routine. It was also recommended to avoid the introduction of comforters until baby is at least 6 months old.
Melatonin for Kids
Jacki also gave us an insight into melatonin, the hormone that the body uses to control our sleep patterns. There are a number of foods that can be given to older children that create the hormone and that can be consumed during their evening meal.
They include warm milk (a popular night time kids’ beverage), potatoes, peanut butter, turkey, bananas, wholemeal bread and honey for kids over the age of 12 months.
A good, consistent sleep routine is vital for a healthy baby and healthy parents. Get too little and things can get pretty difficult for Mummy and Baby. Don’t worry if it doesn’t got to plan at the beginning, as this is quite common during the early months of parenthood. Just remember that if you keep doing the right things…it will get better!
